Quick answer

What matters most when hiring for painting?

Painting quality is largely determined before the finish coat goes on. Surface cleaning, caulk, sanding, repairs, primer and protection can separate a durable project from one that simply looks fresh for a few months. Georgia's heat, humidity, sun and frequent rain make exterior preparation and coating selection especially important.

Our recommendation is to compare the actual written scope, not just the company name or final price. Two estimates can look similar while including very different materials, preparation, warranties, access work, permits or cleanup.

How to compare painting companies

We do not treat inclusion in another directory as proof that a company is right for every project. Verify current service area, licensing where applicable, insurance, scope and contract terms directly with the provider.

Better estimates

What to send a company before asking for a price

Good information produces better estimates. Give the company your city or ZIP code, project dimensions or counts when relevant, photos that show the overall project and problem areas, your desired outcome, any deadline that actually matters, and whether you are comparing repair versus replacement options.

For larger projects, ask for the proposal in writing. If a company cannot clearly explain what is included, what is excluded and how changes are handled, the price is difficult to evaluate no matter how attractive it looks.

Red flags to slow down for

  • A large project described only in a one-line total
  • Pressure to pay before the scope is clear
  • Warranty claims that are not written into the agreement
  • Unclear responsibility for permits, damage repair or cleanup
  • Major differences between verbal promises and the written proposal
Common questions

Painting FAQ

Direct answers to questions buyers commonly ask before hiring.

Is two coats always necessary?

Not in every situation. Coverage depends on color change, substrate, product and application. A written specification is more useful than a blanket coat count.

What matters most in an exterior painting estimate?

Preparation, repair assumptions, primer needs, coating system, access, masking/protection and how weather delays are handled should all be clear.

Is cabinet painting the same as house painting?

No. Cabinets typically require more degreasing, sanding or abrasion, adhesion-focused priming, controlled spraying or fine-finish application and a coating designed for frequent handling.
